Apparently it didn’t take the Warriors long to rebound from their NBA Finals defeat

first_img“We had the entire team at the house and we were drinking some wine and having some fun, … Last we saw the Warriors — at least the ones who were ambulatory — they were congratulating the Toronto Raptors and taking one last look around Oracle Arena. One could only imagine the intense wrenching disappointment, the pangs of regret, the abject melancholy they felt.Seriously. You have to imagine it because that’s not exactly what the players were feeling.Says who? Says Stephen Curry.last_img read more

Can Solar Power Solve the Coal Problem?

first_imgI recently read a New York Times article on the coal problem. In the future, the article notes, we won’t be able to burn coal at our current rate, so there is an obvious need to make a transition to alternative sources of energy. According to the Times article, the most likely replacement for coal is solar energy.Because most industrial economies currently depend heavily on coal, the Times notes that the economic effects of this transition will be perilous. On the bright side, the article cites recent “revolutionary” technical improvements in solar technology that will ease our transition to a solar future, noting that engineers have developed solar power plants that can produce over 7 watts per square foot of collector. “The new power is as exhaustless as the sun itself,” the Times gushed. Here’s the kicker: the article was published on September 10, 1868. That’s right — over 145 years ago. I came across the article by chance, when I entered the word “solar” into the search box on the New York Times web site, and then (on a whim) clicked “oldest to newest.”The article (“The Coal Problem and Solar Engines”) is so interesting that I have reprinted a good chunk of it on this page (see the sidebar below).“The Coal Problem and Solar Engines”[Editor’s note: The following article appeared in the September 10, 1868 issue of The New York Times.]About two years ago, a very earnest discussion, as our readers will remember, sprang up in England on the prospective exhaustion of the coal-beds of Great Britain and Europe. Not only the scientific Press, but the literary and social — the Saturday Review, the Spectator, the Times, the magazines — took it up. Sir Wm. Armstrong and other scientific men attempted estimates of the duration of the… Start Free Trial Already a member? Ponting out, Clarke to lead in fifth Test

first_imgAustralia cricket captain Ricky Ponting will miss the fifth Ashes Test against England because of continuing problems with a broken finger, raising the prospect that his Test career is over.Clarke will start as captain for the first time, with wicketkeeper Brad Haddin named vice-captain in the Sydney Test starting on Monday.Ponting was ruled out of playing after further x-rays on his broken little finger on his left hand “showed evidence that the fracture . . . has moved during the course of the Melbourne Test,” Australia’s team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said Thursday in a statement, adding that Ponting will likely return for the Cricket World Cup in February-March.”I’m devastated to tell you the truth, it was the news I was dreading,” Ponting said on arrival at Sydney airport on Thursday. “During the game I didn’t think I’d done too much more to it.”New South Wales batsman Usman Khawaja and paceman Doug Bollinger were included in a 12-man squad named Thursday for the final Test. Khawaja replaced Ponting while Bollinger was added as a replacement for Ryan Harris, who has a left ankle injury requiring surgery.Ponting’s injury, combined with the team’s failure to regain the Ashes and his own poor batting form, meant the fourth Test which finished Wednesday may have been his last. After England retained the Ashes with an innings win in Melbourne to take an unbeatable 2-1 series lead, Ponting said he was keen to keep playing but would consider the good of the team when making a decision about his playing status.advertisement”I’m not thinking about it at all,” Ponting said on Thursday when asked whether he would end his 152-Test career.Australia’s next scheduled Test series is in August against Sri Lanka.Australia fifth Test squad: Michael Clarke (captain), Shane Watson, Phil Hughes, Usman Khawaja, Mike Hussey, Steve Smith, Brad Haddin, Mitchell Johnson, Peter Siddle, Ben Hilfenhaus, Doug Bollinger, Michael Beerlast_img read more
